The Third Generation Fighter aircraft arrived with a limited supersonic capability and a missile-centric war load before eventually evolving to become more multi-role solutions in their over-battlfield purpose. The preceding generation including the classic F-86 and MiG-15 types but these were shown, in time, to be interim post-World War 2 developments awaiting replacement.
