Cold War Aircraft Index
Aviation History | East vs West
The Cold War period was dotted with proxy wars between the East and West - with the latter coming out victorious in the end.
The end of World War 2 in 1945 brought about the beginning of the 'Cold War' which pitted former wartime allies against one another - namely the United States and the Soviet Union. Germany itself was split in two as an East and West power and this only served to worsen the geopolitical climate across Europe. While no large-scale fighting took place between the two major powers outright, there were plenty of regional wars to be fought and these were handled 'by proxy' with air power becoming a key component of these conflicts. The two major Cold War wars between East and West became the Korean War (1950-1955) and the Vietnam War (1955-1975).
