The Steyr GAMS is a conventionally-arranged manually-actuated bolt-action hunting rifle optimized for mountain / alpine game. The design features a high-quality carbon stock relying on 3D printing to produce an exceptionally light, yet robust, assembly. The rifle is currently marketed by Steyr in both .223 Remington and 6.5 Creedmoor chamberings to suit hunter requirements.

Overall length reaches 40.2 inches with the barrel assembly measuring 19 inches long. Weight is between 5.29lb and 5.5lb depending on variant. The rifle is fed by a four-round detachable box magazine inserted into the action from underneath the rifle body with the magazine well is situated ahead of the two-stage trigger unit. The single-piece stock makes up the forend, pistol grip, and shoulder support with the shoulder section padded for enhanced comfort at both the shooter's shoulder and cheek areas. A pair of sling loops are also included for a strap, one located at the shoulder and the other at the extreme forward end of the forend. The carbon stock is cutout between the shoulder support and the grip handle, creating an oversized "thumbhole".

Over the right side of the frame sits the bolt handle which is actuated by the shooter between rounds while feeding from the magazine. The gun sports a three-position safety, a trigger safety, and bolt handle / firing pin lock. Sites are mounted over the frame in the traditional way for accurized ranged fire.
