The M&P 15 Sport II is a mid-tier, semi-automatic civilian market AR-15 platform offered by the storied firearms company of Smith & Wesson. The long gun is chambered in 5.56mm and carries an overall length of 35-inches with a 16-inch barrel assembly. The internal action is of gas operation and many features common to AR-15s are found here including a polymer grip, aluminum frame, iron sights, adjustable stock (six-position), and thumb safety.

The general arrangement of the rifle is consistent with the AR-15 approach: there is an upper and lower receiver component. The grip is ergonomically angled to the rear and seated just aft of the trigger and trigger guard. The magazine well is positioned ahead of the action and easily managed with the off-hand. The charging handle sits at the rear of the upper receiver. The shoulder stock extends from the rear of the frame and is adjustable by the firer for maximum comfort and length. The forend uses a ribbed cylindrical design providing a forward grip area for the supporting hand. An iron forward sight is positioned at the front end of the forend. The barrel is capped by a flash hider. Over the gun is a modest section of Picatinny rail for the mounting of optics as needed. The Sport II has a dust cover and forward assist as standard.

Variants in the line include an Optics-Ready (OR) form and a compliant, low-capacity magazine (10-round) offering.

Despite the many offerings available, the M&P 15 has nonetheless made a name for itself in a very crowded AR-15 market.
