The Echelon is a striker-fire semi-automatic pistol by Springfield Armory. At its core, it is a no-frills sidearm marketed to law enforcement, security, and home defense markets. Its arrangement is traditional with modularity built into the design in key areas for enhanced customization by the owner.

The trigger group is comprised of the self-contained "Central Operating Group" (COG) which can be installed in any Echelon grip module. Three backstrap and grip sizes are also offered, the latter with an adaptive grip texture for a firmer hold. The oversized trigger guard allows use of a gloved hand and the slide stop and magazine release are both ambidextrous to accommodate both left- or right-handed management of the gun. The slide sports deep forward and rear serrations, a forward trench, and flared sides for a better grip when the assembly is managed. The barrel component is hammer-forged and coated in Melonite while offered barrel lengths are 4.5" (standard) and 5.28" (threaded for suppressor use). Optics mounting is facilitated by the specially-designed "Variable Interface System" (VIS) utilizing four self-locking pins interacting with frame, offering greater after-market modularity. Available magazine counts are a 17-shot and a 20-shot model. A tactical rack U-Notch rear sight with tritium front sight is standard with a tritium 3-Dot arrangement also being offered. A short length of rail is found under the barrel for mounting of tactical accessories.

Currently marketed Echelon pistols are the base Echelon, the Echelon "Low Capacity", the Echelon "3-Dot Tritium", and the Echelon "Threaded, 3-Dot Tritium" models all chambered for the ubiquitous 9mm pistol cartridge.

Taken side-by-side against the competing SIG-Sauer P320 series, the Echelon comes in feeling lighter while having a 'snappier' overall action, these two qualities leading to a slight adjustment on the part of the shooter to achieve the same groupings experienced with the full-sized P320. The gun feels good in an average-sized male hand and the in-built modularity is top-notch with the removable slide cover and under-barrel Picatinny rail - the latter quality lacking in the original P320.
