The Steyr SM12 is a conventional, manually-actuated bolt-action rifle system serving the hunter and sport shooter markets. The arrangement of the rifle is traditional with the wooden body running nearly the entire length of the gun (most models). Its ergonomic shaping includes a pistol-like grip handle as well as a padded shoulder support and under-barrel forend. Sling loops are affixed under the forend and at the underside of the shoulder section. The bolt handle sits over the right side of the body in the usual way and the trigger unit is underslung with the magazine well is under the frame. The magazine is of 3- or 4-shot capacity (model / chambering dependent) and of synthetic construction. As with other hunting / sporting rifles of this class, optics are supported over the receiver for accurized fire at-range.

Depending on the production model in play, the rifle's overall length reaches 43.8 inches with the barrel measuring 22 inches. Weight is 7.7lb (SM12 Half-Stock Standard).

Available in a variety of calibers (model dependent), the rifle supports popular hunting / sporting rounds such as .243 Win, .270 Win, .308 Win, 7mm-08 Rem, and 30-06 Springfield among others (see manufacturer's website for complete list).

Current marketed versions of the SM12 are the SM12 "Halfstock" (left- and right-hand versions) with open sights, the SM12 "Mountain" (open sights), the heavier SM12 "Semi-Weight" (open sights), the SM12 "Stainless" (silver barrel assembly), the and SM12 "Full Stock" (open sights; full-length wooden stock from muzzle to shoulder).
