The Browning X-Bolt is a complete family of bolt-action rifles marketed to hunters, sport shooters, and long-range shooters. The deep list of models available arrive in a variety of calibers encompassing 223REM, 22-250REM, 243WIN, and 204 Ruger to suit the desire role for the rifle. The latest notable variants of the line are the X-Bolt "Target Max", the X-Bolt "Target Pro McMillan", the X-Bolt "Target Lite Max", and the X-Bolt "Speed Suppressor Ready".

The rifle takes on a largely conventional form with a solid frame running three-quarters of the length of the gun. In the flow there is an integrated shoulder stock and grip handle with the former sporting a recoil pad for operator safety / comfort as well as reduced muzzle climb during the firing action. Some models also feature an adjustable cheek-rest. The quick-cycle bolt lever sits over the right side of the body in the usual way with a 60-degree lift range keeping it clear of the mounted optics. Optics are held in place through a four-screw arrangement to better survive field abuse. Feeding is by way of a detachable rotary magazine (flush or extended forms available) inserted through the floor of the frame, its design keeping fresh cartridges directly inline with bolt mechanism. The barrel is free-floating for accuracy-at-range and available in blued, Cerakote, and stainless finishes.

X-Bolt models are seen with and without accessory rails over the frame (for mounting optics) and under the forend for tactical components. Similarly, some models have a clean muzzle while others feature a slotted or perforated muzzle brake. Sling loops are present under the shoulder stock and under the forend for more comfortable transport of the long gun when on-the-march
