The QCW-05 is a Chinese-originated, Suppressed Submachine Gun (SSMG) / Personal Defense Weapon (PDW) development of the 1990s in bullpup form using the unique Chinese 5.8x21mm cartridge and manufactured by China South Industries Group (CSIG). The design is strictly in use by the People's Liberation Army Ground Force (PLAGF) and has also seen issuance to Chinese special forces operatives as well as some select law enforcement units across the country. The series was adopted as a direct successor to the outgoing Type 79 and Type 85 silenced SMGs (both detailed elsewhere on this site) which arrived in the 1980s. The QCW-05 was unveiled to the public for the first time in 2005.

The "bullpup" configuration allows the gun-maker to retain a full-length barrel assembly as the internal working components of the gun are set in the oversized, typically fixed shoulder stock section - the action, feed, and extraction port are all located aft of the pistol grip / trigger unit. As a result, a more compact tactically-minded weapon can be had which is suitable for room-clearing and related Close Quarters Battle (CQB) actions. Drawbacks of this approach include a fixed shoulder support (non-adjustable), the possibility of the operator running his/her hand in front of the active barrel, and the action being brought closer to the operator's face. However, the arrangement has been proven over decades of active and continuous service and is used in many modern designs today.

The design arrangement of this gun sees the pistol grip / trigger unit set at the midway point of the overall length, resulting in a more balanced end-product when held out with a single hand/arm. The forend is short and ribbed to provide a secondary hand support placement area. The threaded barrel extends out from the forend and is capped by a long suppressor assembly. Over the receiver is featured a long-running, unbroken structure making up the carrying handle. The changing handle is embedded within this loop shape and is accessible from both sides of the gun. The shoulder support assembly has a rectangular extraction port positioned just over the magazine feed. The feed takes a 50-round curved detachable box magazine which extends out beyond the length of the pistol grip. Controls such as the fire selector are set within easy reach of the primary hand's thumb. For sighting, a flip-up rear sighting device is used as standard.

Internally, the weapon utilizes the proven "blowback" system of operation with an open-bolt arrangement. The propellant charge's own ignition generates expanding gasses which are used to create the energy needed, the cartridge case being driven backwards in the process. This single, multi-stage action is another, more compact, method of firing off the bullet in the chamber while introducing a fresh cartridge from the awaiting, spring-loaded magazine.

The QCW-05 is chambered in the proprietary Chinese 5.8x21mm cartridge (DAP-92 and DCV-05 types both supported). This rimless, bottleneck round was developed by China NORth Industries Corporation (NORINCO) in 1994 and has become a more common sight in the Chinese armed forces since. The round is an intermediate rifle round of relatively less penetration power at-range when compared to Western contemporaries but features enhanced man-stopping capabilities particularly against armored (body armor) targets.

Gas pressure from the rearward movement of the ignited cartridge case provides the needed bolt movement, ejecting the spent case and stripping a fresh case from the magazine.
