For a time, Chinese forces were issued the crude but effective Type 64 silenced pistol. The weapon was developed around a basic blowback principle. With blowback, the operation utilizes energy directed to the internal unlocked bolt as provided by the rearwards movement of the cartridge case (due to gas pressure provided to the base of the case) during the firing action. The most notable design feature of the Type 64 silenced pistol is its use of a permanently attached Maxim silencer assembly fitted over the barrel. This provides the Type 64 with a rather ungainly and utilitarian appearance, the pistol grip and trigger unit remaining conventional-looking to the trained eye. The silencer serves to trap the expanding gasses of the exiting bullet as it drives down the assembly. The end result is a subsonic exit due to a lowered muzzle velocity, resulting in little audible noise being generated. The slide can be locked which restricts the noise of a moving slide when the firing action is executed (the spent cartridge case cannot be ejected until the slide is unlocked once again). The Type 64 silenced pistol is coupled with the distinct 7.65x17mm Type 64 rimless low-powered cartridge (rated with muzzle velocity of 900 feet per second) and this cartridge cannot be substituted with any other 7.65mm supplies. The weapon is fed via an 8-round detachable box magazine.

All told, the Type 64 silenced pistol is a functional system intended to neutralize sentries, high-ranking personnel and any other manner of high valued human target. Do to the inherent design nature of such silenced weapons, they are principally restricted in their use to specialized units such as special forces elements. Additionally, the use of a silencer makes them generally cumbersome weapons for storage on the body and further limits their usable ranges in-the-field. The use of strict ammunition types also restricts the logistical friendliness of the weapon. However, these limitations are supremely offset for the clandestine nature of such guns - allowing operatives to deal with unsuspecting targets at will and maintain the element of surprise on missions for a given length of time.

While designated similarly to the "Type 64" pistol, an indigenous Chinese semi-automatic sidearm design of the Chinese military and police, the two pistols are completely separate and different offerings altogether according to sources.

The Type 64 silenced pistol was eventually evolved into the more refined Type 67 series featuring a less-conspicuous, lighter silencer assembly fitting neatly into a squared-off frame while internals of the Type 64 were retained. This version also chambered the 7.65x17mm Type 64 cartridge.
