The Italian firearms concern of Beretta holds a long-running storied line dating back to 1526 - making it one of the oldest active gun makers anywhere in the world. The company struck gold with semi-automatic sidearms in the early part of the 1900s and delved into the submachine gun market thereafter. Today, the company is still renowned for its craftsmanship and has managed to stay with the times in releasing models appropriate to market needs. One of its more recent automatic weapons creations is the Mx4 "Storm" submachine gun which follows in the Storm line of weapons that includes the civilian-minded Cx4 carbine (based on the militarized Mx4) and Px4 semi-automatic pistol.

The Mx4 is a no-frills modern automatic weapon utilizing a straight blowback action and typically chambered for the 9x19mm Parabellum German pistol cartridge (another model chambers .45 ACP). Feeding is by way of a 30-round detachable box magazine (or pistol magazine if needed) and sighting through a two-position aperture sight arrangement. Effective ranges reach out to 200 meters with a muzzle velocity of 1,280 feet per second. Its outward design is such to promote fine elegant lines yet still maintain a useful, compact profile fitting well in the hands. Picatinny rail sections add a tactical value to the gun and are a staple of modern firearms, allowing the operator to customize his system with various optics, aimers, grips, bipods, and the like to suit the mission need. The trigger group is enclosed in a thick, solid ring and the buttstock integrated into the plastic body of the weapon with a cutout aft of the pistol grip area.

Overall weight reaches 2.5 kilograms with a length of 647mm and a barrel length of 312mm.

To date (2015), the Mx4 has been ordered by the governments of India (Border Guard), Italy (Navy), Libya, Portugal, and Venezuela (National Guard). In practice the weapon has already earned the trust of various government forces around the world through its accuracy, compactness, and reliability - a feat considering the glut of submachine gun options available to any one customer.
