The Belgian concern of Fabrique Nationale developed and marketed the FN Police 12ga as a conventional, 12-guage pump-action slide shotgun. It has gone on to serve in military and civilian roles as well, proving itself reliable as a no-frills system. The basic model is featured with an 18-inch barrel and more tactically-minded versions have appeared with the shorter 14-inch variety. In the American gun market, the FN Police is marketed as the FN "Tactical Police Shotgun". The FN Police began serial production in 1995.

At its core, the FN Police follows the widely-accepted design lines of preceding successful shotgun types of the modern era. The receiver is rectangular and largely featureless save for the ejection port seated to the right side of the body. Loading is through an underside gate that accesses the tubular magazine fitted under the barrel. As a pump-action shotgun, the action is cycled through manual actuation of the slide which clears the chamber while accepting a fresh shell from the awaiting magazine (if any reside). Full-barrel-length variants sport a magazine count of 7+1 (one round chambered) 12-gauge shells while the shortened-barrel version receives an equally shortened 4+1 tubular magazine. Either barrel form is smoothbore in its design. A visible, physical safety facility is featured near the trigger.

The American-market Tactical Police Shotgun variant arrives with an M16-style telescoping buttstock and standalone pistol grip. The receiver remains unchanged while a short length of rail is featured to accept various sight fittings including the optional "C-More" type. The ribbed slide is fitted over the tubular magazine in the usual way with a cap at the forward end. The barrel is exposed with a front iron sight fitted just aft and above the muzzle.

Shotguns have since evolved to fulfill all manner of duties including door breaching, close-quarters combat, home defense, riot control, target shooting and game shooting.
