F.P. Devisme was a highly skilled weapons maker based in Paris, France. While not exclusively known for his high-quality guns, Devisme also produced high-quality swords and his products were so highly respected that they often adorned the rooms and stately dress of high ranking government personnel and royalty of his time. Devisme also enjoyed a close relationship with southern leaders during the American Civil War to which his customers included both General Robert E. Lee and President Jefferson Davis. Many of Devisme's works were well constructed of the finest materials and embellished with such accessories as intricate engraved patterns and off-set with use of ivory and gold.
Devisme produced a five-shot, double-action, percussion-based revolver chambered for a .30 caliber cartridge. Its double-action system meant that the hammer was cocked automatically after the gun was fired (as opposed to single-action which required manual intervention on the part of the user). Percussion-based guns utilized the percussion cap principle which itself was developed about 1830, effectively replacing flintlock-based guns and allowing musket-type firearms to be used in all manner of weather.
The Devisme revolver was very elegant in design and well-engraved for presentation despite being of largely conventional design. The gun body was smooth with clean, curving lines throughout. The barrel was octagonal in nature and hinged on a low-set swivel point to allow for unfettered access to the cylinder for reloading. The cylinder itself was smooth-sided and the pistol grip was integrated into the rear of the receiver, contouring ever so smoothly to form a curved vertical hand hold. The trigger was slender and curved while set within a thin near-circular ring. Barrel length measured in at 4.25 inches.
This revolver became one of the last Devisme percussion arms attempts before he moved on to design and development of rimfire-based guns.
