Designed in the early part of the 1980s, and formally Introduced in 1984, the FHJ-84 "Individual Anti-Chemical Rocket Launcher" - or "Type 84" - serves modern marine forces of the Chinese military. The product was designed and is (currently) manufactured by local defense powerhouse NORINCO ("China NORth INdustries COrporation"). Several variants of the base design have since emerged including the "FHJ-01" and the "FHJ-02", both detailed below. The system is akin to the Cold War-era American M202A1 FLASH four-shot, shoulder-fired weapon detailed elsewhere on this site.
The FHJ-84 is unique as portable, shoulder-fired rocket launchers go as it features an over-under twin-barrel arrangement offering a two-shot functionality. Each launch tube is sized to 62mm and fires an 11lb projectile sporting various war loads as needed - including smoke and incendiary. Effective range is out to 660 feet with a maximum range capability reaching to 1,600 feet (at reduced point accuracy). The projectiles are fed into the weapon system via a detachable twin-shot casing and sighting is through a standard daytime scope. Overall weight is 18lb and the unit has an overall length of nearly four feet. The typical operating crew is two personnel though the weapon can be easily fired by just one.
Such a battlefield solution provides the Chinese infantryman with a potent anti-infantry weapon, particularly for marines charged with assaulting fortified positions as they move inland from a beach. In wars prior, this role was headed by marines and army units fielding cumbersome (and highly dangerous) flamethrower systems which posed as much a threat to friendlies as it did to enemies. The FHJ-84/Type 84 attempts to remedy this danger by having a highly portable, completely encased weapon system that can furthermore operate at range with minimal difficulty and maintenance.
Variants of the FHJ-84 are the FHJ-01 and the FHJ-02. The FHJ-01 is detailed as an improved form of the original with an upgraded daytime sighting device as well as an all-new projectile type offering better performance and battlefield effect. The FHJ-02 serves more in the Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) role in that it features a complete bank of seven launch tubes and is fire remotely by the crew.
