The modern Turkish Navy has made tremendous gains towards global legitimacy and regional power projection over the last two decades. Currently (2019), its forces can field up to ten fighting corvettes of which four belong to the all-modern "Ada-class". The class is led by TCG Heybeliada (F-511) and includes sister-ships TCG Buyukada (F-512), TCG Burgazada (F-513), and TCG Kinaliada (F-514). The group displaces in the 2,535 ton (short) range and has been developed specifically for the Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) role with inherent patrolling capabilities.
The Ada-class was born as a Turkish national directive encompassing as many Turkish resources into the design, development, and construction of the warships as possible. Twelve of the series were originally planned though only four (as of April 2019) have been completed, these solely for Turkish naval forces. The types have been given proven stealth techniques, modern combat and survival systems, weaponry consistent with corvette-type warships, and can operate near-offshore (in support of amphibious operations) as well as in "Blue Water" environments far from home.
TCG Burgazada (F-513), the focus of this article, saw her keel laid down on December 17th, 2014 and she was launched to sea on June 21st, 2016. Formally commissioned on November 4th, 2018, she maintains an active service status and is assigned the pennant number of "F-513" on her hull.
Structurally, the warship has a running length of 326.5 feet with a beam of 47.1 feet, draught of 12.8 feet. Displacement reaches 2,340 tons (short). Installed systems include a full-service Combat Management System (CMS) as well as search radar, GPS navigation, sonar, and Fire Control Radar (FCR). The CMS is of wholly-indigenous design and is labeled "GENESIS".
Outwardly, the warship exudes all of the fine lines of a modern warship: stealth is achieved through few protrusions about the craft and includes a slab-sided hull design with integrated hull-to-superstructure lines. The bridge is incorporated into the superstructure and the main mast is enclosed . Low-profile smoke funnels help to reduce the signature of the vessel and a stepped format is used towards the aft section of the ship.
Installed power is from a CODAG (COmbined Diesel-And-Gas) arrangement involving 1 x Gas turbine with 2 x Marine diesels developing 42,430 horsepower to 2 x Shafts under stern. This provides the vessel with a maximum ocean-going speed of around 30 knots out to a range of 3,500 nautical miles.
Onboard, the vessel supports a crew up to 106 strong and includes a dedicated air wing for the operation of helicopters from the stern section. Food and supply stores allow the ship to remain at-sea for the period of ten consecutive days or up to twenty-one when fleet support is factored in.
Over the stern of the vessel is a helicopter/hangar combination platform allowing for the housing/retrieval of up to two medium-lift naval helicopters. These helicopters can be used to further broaden the warship's ASW capabilities, assist in Search And Rescue (SAR) sorties, and undertake general patrol and fleet resupply missions as needed. In addition to this, the warship fully supports recoverable maritime Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs).
