The Project 22160 class is a patrol ship group serving the modern Russian Navy and currently (2024) encompass Vasily Bykov (368), Dmitry Rogachev (375), and Pavel Derzhavin (363) commissioned in 2018, 2019, and 2020, respectively. The 1,500 ton vessels are all assigned to the Black Sea Fleet as of this writing (2024). The fourth-in-series, Sergey Kotov and the focus of this article, was reported sunk by unmanned Ukrainian submersibles in March of 2024.

Kotov was completed by the Zaliv Shipyard.

Sergey Kotov saw its keel laid down on May 8th, 2016 and she was launched to sea for trials on January 29th, 2021. Formal commissioning followed on July 30th, 2022. With her demise in March of 2024 at the hands of the Ukrainians, the warship led a brief service life.

As part of the Project 22160 patrol class, the warship followed the design standard by fielding a complement of some 80 personnel.

Installed power stemmed from a COmbined Diesel-And-Gas (CODAG) arrangement to maximize fuel efficiency under loads. This gave the ship a top ocean-going speed of up to 30 knots, under ideal conditions, and a range out to 6,000 miles.

Installed armament included a single 76.2mm AK-176MA series automatic Dual-Purpose (DP) turreted deck gun set over the forecastle. This was backed by a 10-barreled DP-64 Automatic Grenade Launcher (AGL) as well as a twin-barreled DP-64 AGL. There was also support for torpedoes, land-attack cruise missiles, and Surface-to-Air Missiles (SAMs) obtained by adding weapon modules to the ship. Close-in, point-defense armament included a pair of 14.5mm MTPU Heavy Machine Guns (HMGs).

The vessel was given a wholly clean, stealth-centric design shape with minimizes protrusions and a blended hull-superstructure arrangement. The bridge section sat high and aft of the forecastle turret emplacement and, atop this structure, was fitted the main mast works with its array of sensors and processing systems. The superstructure stepped down towards the stern to which a single-helicopter flight deck was added. This area supported a Ka-27 or Ka-226 navalized helicopter for over-the-horizon work.

Sergey Kotov met her end on March 5th, 2024 when MAGURA V5 naval drones were launched at her by Ukrainian forces. The damage was such that the hull is believed to be a complete loss to Russian forces - a major blow to Black Sea operations.
