KRI Nagapasa (403) leads her three-strong Nagapasa-class of diesel-electric attack submarines for the modern Indonesian Navy. The boats are an original South Korean design with construction after the first boat now involving Indonesian shipyards. With the three in service, a further three remain on order (2023) and the class is fielded alongside the West German-born Cakra-class which constitutes just a single hull, KRI Cakra (KRI Nanggala tragically being lost in April 2021 with all hands aboard).

The boats represent the most modern of the undersea offerings of the Indonesian Fleet and are therefore a critical component to national defense and deterrence.

KRI Nagapasa was ordered in December of 2011 and saw her keel laid down by Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering of South Korea on April 9th, 2015. Launched on March 24th, 2016, the boat was commissioned into service with the Indonesian Navy on August 2nd, 2017.

Externally, the design of Nagapasa is conventional with a tubular hull, rectangular sail, and blunt nosecone section. Internally, power is from 4 x MTU 12C493 diesel generators developing 5,000 horsepower propelling the boat to submerged speeds of 21.5 knots out to a range of 11,000 nautical miles. The hull has been tested to depths of 1,600 feet. Installed systems include the Kongsberg MSI-90U Mk.2 Combat Management System (CMS), the Atlas Elektronik CSU-90 active/passive sonar array, and the Wartsilia ELAC KaleidoSope sonar system. The crew numbers 40 men.

Displacement is 1,400 tons and the hull measures 201.1 feet long with a beam of 20.7 feet and a draught of 18.1 feet.

Armament is 8 x 533mm (21") torpedo tubes with 14 "Black Shark" torpedo reloads.
