The hull that makes up KRI Bung Tomo (357) of the modern Indonesian Navy originated as KDB Jerambak (30) for the Brunei Navy (under the Nakhoda Ragam-class name, though never formally commissioned), the corvette warship launched on June 22nd, 2002. In 2014, the hull was sold off to the Indonesian Navy to begin life anew as KRI Bung Tomo and formal commissioned service followed on July 11th, 2004. The vessel stands as the lead ship of its Bung Tomo-class which includes sisters KRI John Lie and KRI Usman Harun, both hulls also secured from the Brunei. At any event, the hulls were constructed by defense powerhouse BAe Systems Marine to satisfy a Brunei Navy requirement for a Mult-Role Light Frigate (MRLF).

Construction took place from 1998 until 2002 and resulted in the three aforementioned hulls being completed to the standard. A dispute between the customer and BAe arose which led to their sale to Indonesia where all three hulls maintain an active status today (2023).

KRI Bung Tomo displaces 1,940 tons and has a running length of 294.10 feet with a draught of 11.9 feet. Installed power are 4 x MAN B&W / Ruston Diesel engines driving 2 x Shafts astern. This provides the ship with a top ocean-going speed of 30 knots and a range out to 5,000 nautical miles. Onboard stores for the crew of 103 allows the vessel to remain at-sea for a period of approximately 21 days.

The warship is equipped with relatively modern sensors, processing systems, and communications. This includes the Kelvin Hughes Type 1007 navigation unit, the Thales Nederland surface-search radar, and the Thales TMS 4130C1 sonar (hull-mounted).

Installed armament is 1 x 76mm OTO-Melara turreted deck gun with 16 x VLS (MBDA "Seawolf" missiles) Surface-to-Air Missiles (SAMs), 2 x 4-cell MBDA EXOCET anti-ship missile launchers, 2 x BAe Systems Mk.32 triple torpedo tubes, and 2 x 30mm DS30B REMSIG autocannons for close-in defense. All told, this provides the ship with a solution to meet most any modern threat.

The vessel's profile show's off its late-Cold-War-era origins: there is a single turreted deck gun over the forecastle with the VLS and bridge section directly aft. Semi-enclosed, pyramidal main mast is seated atop the bridge works. Over midships are low-profile, enclosed smoke funnels exhausting the propulsion scheme within. The hull line is unbroken from bow to stern though the ship lacks the inherent stealth features seen in more modern designs. Over the stern is a helipad supporting a single medium-lift helicopter for Over-the-Horizon (OtH) work.
