The Maya-class guided-missile destroyer group was established by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) as an extension of the existing Atago-class destroyers, themselves being improved Kongo-class warships. The new class is made up by JS Maya (DDG-179) and JS Haguro (DDG-180). Both warships were constructed by JUM of Yokohama with the latter being laid down on January 23rd, 2018, launched on July 17th, 2019, and set to be commissioned sometime in 2021 (lead-ship JS Maya was commissioned in March of 2020).
Consistent with the Maya-class, Haguro has a displacement of 8,200 tons under standard load and up to 10,250 tons under full load. She features a running length of 557.4 feet, a beam of 72.9 feet, and a draught down to 21 feet. Power is from 4 x IHI (General Electric) LM2500-30 series gas turbines supplying upwards of 68,010 horsepower to twin shafts astern, giving the vessel good legs and a maximum ocean-going speed of 30 knots.
Aboard is a crew complement of about 300 personnel. A navy helicopter is supported from the stern-based helipad which includes an attached hangar complete with full-service support facilities. A single Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat (RHIB) is carried for ship-boarding actions. Systems include the AN/SPY-1D(V) Passive, Electronically-Scanned Array (PESA) radar suite, the AN/SPQ-9 surface-search radar, and the AN-SQQQ-89 anti-submarine suite.
Armament is both projectile- and missile-based with the latter being the primary focus of the ship. 1 x 5" (127mm) /L64 Mk 45 Mod 4 turreted gun is held over the forecastle and this is backed by twin 20mm Phalanx Close-In Weapon Systems (CIWSs) digitally-controlled and tasked with defending against low-flying aerial threats. The missile reach of the ship includes 64-cell and 32-cell Vertical Launching Systems (VLSs) set fore and aft on the ship. 2 x Missile launchers are also carried housing Type 17 weapons. 2 x Type 68 triple-torpedo tubes can be assigned to target both surface and underwater threats as they arise.
The vessel can launch the SM-2MR Standard missile, the SM-3 anti-ballistic missile, the SM-6 Standard missile, and the Type 07 VL-ASROC anti-submarine weapon. Beyond this is the Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) support provided by the onboard helicopter which is equipped to combat at-sea threats.
