The Russian Navy is one of the primary service branches of Russian Armed Forces that has seen considerable attention paid to it during Russia's post-Cold War resurgence. The Steregushchiy-class corvette warships have been part of the modernization of the Russian fleet and number ten of the twenty or so planned for procurement. The vessels began to see commissioning after 2007 and mark one of the most modern of the Russian navy offerings to date. A more advanced version of the class has since been developed, this being the Gremyashchiy-class group of surface ships under "Project 20385".

At least two of the Gremyashchiy-class have been completed with Gremyashchiy becoming the lead ship of the group in 2015 and Provornyy following in 2016. Western-imposed sanctions on Russia have limited availability of German MTU diesels which has, in turn, limited construction of additional Gremyashchiy-class warships.

Gremyashchiy itself is assigned to active duty with the Northern Fleet. Its keel was laid down in 2011.

The Gremyashchiy-class does not succeed the Steregushchiy-class but considered a complement to it. The warships follow more of a multi-purpose design than the previous offerings and carry greater missile-minded firepower. Displacement is 2,200 tons with a length of 343 feet, a beam of 36 feet and a draught of 12 feet. Power is through a COmbined Diesel And Diesel (CODAD) arrangement seeing 4 x MTU diesels driving 2 x shafts. Speed (in ideal conditions) can reach up to 26 knots with a range out to 3,800 nautical miles.

The Furke-E 3D suite forms the air search radar aspect of the ship while surface search is handled by the Granit Garpun-B/3Ts-25E/PLANK SHAVE radar unit. Fire control is through the Ratep 5P-10E Puma system. Sonar facilities are managed through the bow-mounted Zarya-ME and the towed Vinyetka. The GORIZONT-25 suite is provided for navigation. TK-25E-5 forms the Electronic Warfare (EW) section adn countermeasures are 4 x PK-10 launchers.

1 x 100mm A-190 turreted deck gun heads the conventional armament section. 2 x AK-630M Close-In Weapon Systems (CIWSs) provide defense against low-flying, short-ranged targets. Extreme close-in defense is through 2 x 14.5mm MTPU Heavy Machine Guns (HMGs). 2 x 8 Redut missiles are carried in Veritcal Launching System (VLS) cells. A 1 x 8 UKSK cell are cleared for firing Oniks, Kalibr or Medvedka missiles. 2 x 4 330mm torpedo launchers are also installed.

Compared to the previous Steregushchiy-class, the Gremyashchiy-class incorporates more stealth features into the design and construction of the warships. This includes slab-siding and specially coated surfaces. Over stern is a helipad for launching and retrieving a Kamov Ka-27 navy helicopter.
