The Type 054A guided-missile frigate - known to the West as the "Jiangkai II-class" - is the most modern fighting frigate available to the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) of China. The 4,000 ton vessels are expected to number 50 in all once construction is fully complete with some 30 hulls having been launched to date. Among their number is CNS Yangzhou (578) which was built by Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding and launched on September 30th, 2013. She was formally commissioned into service on September 21st, 2015 and maintains an active status in the Chinese surface fleet.
Measuring 440 feet long with a beam of 52 feet, the warship is powered through a CODAD (COmbined Diesel-And-Diesel) arrangement encompassing 4 x Shaanxi 16PA6STC marine diesels developing 7,600 horsepower each to twin shafts. This provides the vessel with a top ocean-going speed of 27 knots out to a range of 8,025 nautical miles giving the vessel good legs in the Blue Water environment.
Internally, the ship supports a crew of 165. Installed sensors and processing systems include the Type 344 and Type 382 radar sets as well as 4 x Type 345 Fire Control Radars. Navigation is handled by a pair of Racal RM-1290 systems. Both passive and active sonar arrays are carried for anti-submarine sorties. The combat data system is a localized version of the Western Thomson-CSF system and the Electronic Warfare (EW) suite is comprised of the Type 922-1 Radar Warning Receiver (RWR) and the HZ-100 ECM / ELINT system.
Supported armament systems are 1 x 76mm PJ26 turreted deck gun (forecastle), 1 x 32-cell Vertical Launching System (VLS, forecastle), 2 x 4-cell C-803 cruise missile launchers, 2 x 30mm Type 730 Gatling-style Close-In Weapon Systems (CIWSs), 2 x triple-tube 324mm Yu-7 torpedo launchers, and 2 x Type 726-4 18-tube decoy rocket launchers.
Over the rear of the ship lies a single-helicopter helipad with combination hangar deck area supporting a Harbin Z-9C Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) rotorcraft.
