The Wanshan Y-12B CDMS (Coastal Defense Missile System) is a modern, in-service mobile Chinese military solution intended to fire the land-based version of the YJ-12 anti-ship / land-attack cruise missile (the "YJ-12B"). The resulting vehicle is an "all-in-one" solution for Chinese forces mating a multi-wheeled, heavy-duty military truck to a multi-shot launcher component, producing an effective counter to marauding enemy vessels as well as land-based targets.

In the arrangement, the 22.5 ton, multi-faceted WS2600 10x8 all-wheeled truck (by Wanshan Special Vehicle of China) serves as the host vehicle for the YJ-12B cruise missile, the latter which is featured by way of an erectable triple-shot launcher set over the rear of the chassis. The truck has its windowed crew cab over the bow with an integrated launch station seated immediately aft. Dimensions include an overall length of 53.6 feet, a width of 10 feet, and a height of 9.25 feet. A typical operating crew is seven to eight personnel needed for the various functions of the complete weapon system. The truck is able to haul payloads of up to 42.5 tons.

Under the hood is a German Deutz diesel-fueled engine developing 544 horsepower giving it "legs" out to 405 miles and a road speed maximum of 45 miles-per-hour (this allows it to keep up with the main fighting force). The naturally high ground clearance of the truck, coupled with its all-wheel drive arrangement, ensures some capability over uneven / rough terrain (cross-country travel) while its inherently mobile aspect allows the vehicle to launch its war load and then escape the launch scene as needed.

The launcher component of the design houses a trio of the missiles in a staggered side-by-side-by-side arrangement. The missiles measure 21 feet in length and have a diameter of 2.48 feet while capped by a variable warhead weighing between 455 to 1,100lb. The integrated guidance system is terminal and the missiles can reach maximum speeds of up to Mach 4 - depending on the operating altitude and warhead in play - giving little time for the target to react. Operational range of the missiles is reportedly out to 250 miles though, again, this depends on operating altitude and warhead used. The missile is driven through a ramjet motor unit aided by a booster propulsion system.

The same missiles are actively used by such platforms as the People's Liberation Army Air Force's (PLAAF) H-6 strategic medium bomber and the Type 051B series of destroyers serving the People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN).©MilitaryFactory.com
