The Stryker MSL (Maneuver Short-range air defense Launcher) is a proposed close-in airspace denial mobile weapons platform developed jointly by General Dynamics Land Systems and Boeing. The system was debuted at the Space and Missile Defense Symposium in Huntsville, Alabama in August of 2017 and represents a slightly modified Stryker 8x8 wheeled hull with the Boeing "Avenger" turret system installed over the rear section. The turret is capable of search, track and engagement through the AIM-9X "Sidewinder" Air-to-Air Missile (AAM) or the AGM-114 "Hellfire" Anti-Tank Missile (ATM) and given a full 360-degree traversal. The vehicle also carries the 30mm M230 Bushmaster chain gun.
Beyond its base use in defending areas or convoys from aircraft (both fixed-wing and rotary-wing), the system is being touted as a counter to enemy Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) as well as incoming cruise missiles.
Since the Stryker vehicle portion of the system remains largely mechanically unchanged, the Stryker MSL retains all of the versatility of the original product - allowing it to keep pace with mechanized ground forces. The crew of three sit protected within the confines of the vehicle, able to withstand small caliber fire and artillery spray. There is a self-target acquisition capability built-in and an Electronic Warfare (EW) suite for self-preservation.
The Stryker MSL is integrated into the current U.S. Army systems and has been successfully tested with a variety of machine guns, directed energy systems and 2.75" rockets.
Due to its Stryker origins, the vehicle is fully air-transportable in the belly of the C-17 series haulers (or similar).
