The Gulfstream G600 business jet has been developed by Gulfstream Aerospace to succeed its G550 design. The G550 was introduced as recently as 2004 and has been in production since 2003 with 550 units built to date (2017). The G600, under development as of this writing (2017), first flew on December 17th, 2016 and is planned for series introduction in late-2018.
Gulfstream remains a leader in the world of VIP / business jet travel and the G600 is billed as a refinement of the aircraft class. Dimensionally larger than the similar G500 series (detailed elsewhere on this site), the G600 is touted as having best-in-class comfort, speed, range and fuel efficiency. The cockpit seats two pilots in a side-by-side arrangement with side control sticks and full-color touchscreen displays. Vision out-of-the-cockpit is excellent thanks to a short nosecone and combat fighter aircraft-like "look-down" capability from either seat. Ground running is accomplished by a conventional, retractable tricycle undercarriage. A kitchen, lavatory and comfort seating are all part of the Gulfstream G600 experience with some 90 different seat style combinations offered for the latter. Technologies include all-modern digital processing and flight control assistance as well as increased use of automation in the cockpit.
Outwardly, the aircraft is arranged in a traditional fashion: the cockpit is seated well-forward in the design with the passenger section directly aft. The fuselage sides are dotted by oval windows for passenger viewing. The wing mainplanes are swept rearwards and capped by winglets at the tips. The mainplanes are set near midships. The tail unit has a single vertical fin with a high-mounted horizontal plane clearing the wash of the side-mounted turbofan engine installations. The engines are kept as far aft as possible to minimize cabin noise.
The base G600 model has capacity for nineteen passengers. It sports an overall length of 96 feet with wingspan of 95 feet and a height of 25.2 feet. Empty weight is 57,440lb against an MTOW of 91,600lb. Power is from 2 x Pratt & Whitney Canada PW815GA turbofan engines developing 15,680lb of thrust each at take-off. Maximum speed is 610 miles per hour with a maximum altitude of 51,000 feet and range out to 7,135 miles.
August 2018 - It was announced that the initial G600 test aircraft has begun performance testing. Service entry is still scheduled for late-2018/early-2019.
February 2019 - Gulfstream has delayed type certification and service introduction from early-2019 to a later date citing the month-long (35-day) United States government shutdown as the culprit.
February 2019 - The Gulfstream G600 BizJet was debuted at Avalon Air Show 2019 in Australia.
June 2019 - The G600 has achieved certification (type and production) with the FAA.
August 2019 - Gulfstream has delivered its first G600 aircraft to an unnamed customer.
October 2019 - Certification of the G650ER model is scheduled for sometime in 2022.
May 2020 - The G600 series has achieved European certification.
