Kbk wz/88 (wz. 1988) (Tantal) Automatic Rifle (1991)

Authored By Staff Writer | Last Updated: 8/18/2012

The wz. 1988 Tantal is little more than a Polish copy of the Russian-produced AK-74S model series with some Polish modifications.

Though appearing as nothing more than a Polish copy of the Russian-made Kalashnikov AK-74S rifle, the wz/88 sports some features that differentiate it from its Russian-inspired heritage. Foremost, the system is generally produced with a synthetic all-black exterior construction and features a three-round burst capability. The overall size and shape is also slightly different from the AK-74S type and the muzzle is designed to accept bayonet and grenade launcher fittings.

The wz/88 "Tantal" is an assault rifle firing the 5.45x39.5mm Soviet cartridge from a 30-round detachable box magazine. A cyclic rate-of-fire of 600 rounds is achievable and a muzzle velocity of 880 meters per second is recorded. A bipod and shoulder strap can be fitted to the system as desired. The wz/88 also appears in the form of the wz/90 model series. This particular variant differs from the wz/88 in that it is chambered to fire the 5.56x45mm NATO standard cartridge and is offered up as the standard Polish Army rifle of choice as well as for export sale.
