The large-caliber 'Peony' follows in the long line of Soviet artillery systems. By Staff Writer
The 2S7 Pion ('Peony') is noted as being the largest self-propelled gun in the world. First unveiled to the West in the late 1970's. it continued the Soviet tradition of concentrated heavy artillery systems. A spade is lowered in the rear when in firing mode with a load-assist device available. The 2S7, like other heavy caliber SPGs of this type, requires the use of an ammunition carrier to follow the weapons system.
The main gun has a traverse of 15 degrees side to side and elevation/depression from 60 to 0 degrees respectively. The main gun can lob projectiles upwards of 35.5 km (22 miles) and up to 47 km (29 miles) with rocket assisted ammunition. The official designation is the SO-203 and appears as the M1975 when in US documentation. It has seen minimal export when compared to other Russian artillery systems.
