The Ordnance Revolver Model 1882 was a Swiss attempt at making a lighter revolver for its Army. The Swiss Army was already fielding rather heavy pistols firing a 10.4mm cartridge. Lieutenant-Colonel Rudolph Schmidt of Eidgenossischen Waffenfabrik in Bern, Switzerland, set about to design and develop an altogether new cartridge for an all-new revolver of lighter weight. The resulting cartridge became the 7.5mmx23R while the resulting revolver became the Model 1882.

The Model 1882 was of a conventional revolver design. The detailed pistol grip was set well low in the design and the hammer within easy reach. The trigger was set within a rounded trigger guard and mounted just under the six-round rotating cylinder which itself sported identifiable fluting. The chamber rod was set just under the hexagonal barrel which itself measured in as 4.5 inches in length. The firing of the revolver was via double-action.
