ERCYES is a Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) avionics modernization of in-service Lockheed Martin C-130B and C-130E tactical transports of the Turkish Air Force (TAF). The program contract was signed in December of 2006 between TAI and firm SSM to result in the modification of six B- and thirteen E-models for the fleet. The program will include an "all-glass", digitally-managed cockpit comprised of four Multi-Function Displays (MFDs), a pair of CDUs, twin multi-mission computers to spread about the mission workload, and all-modern ILS.

The program involves a pair of prototypes for the initial conversion work to be handed by TAI. From this will be developed kits for the TAF to convert the remainder of the intended C-130 fleet. The kits will also be made available to other global operators of the C-130 family line.

The Lockheed aircraft will retain all of its inherently excellent qualities including "low-and-slow" handling / flight made possible by the high-winged mainplanes, ground clearance of the turboprop blades, and the powered rear cargo access door.

The expected result will be a tactical-level airlifter suitable for the rigors of the modern battlefield more in line with the latest Western C-130 operational models and other high-winged transport offerings originating from Europe.
