Soviet-Afghan War Aircraft (1979-1989)

Aviation | Cold War

Technological and logistical superiority would, once again, show a Superpower of the Cold War that winning regional conflicts were not as easy as expected.

Despite its obvious technological superiority, the Soviet military was poorly supplied and directed during the nine-years-long-plus campaign in Asia. Its bombers and fighters were largely marginalized so air support fell to armed gunship helicopters to quell the unrest along the vastness of the Afghan countryside. Soviet strategy was rooted in Central European warfare - not against a fluid, determined guerilla force - limiting the effectiveness of the Soviet campaigns as a whole before its ultimate withdrawal in 1989.
