Operation Linebacker I & II (1972)

The massive air assaults of Operation Linebacker I/II were held by the United States in 1972 during the Vietnam War.

Below is a showcase of the combat aircraft types utilized during Operation Linebacker I and Operation Linebacker II, massive aerial bombardment campaigns undertaken by the various services of the United States in October and December of 1972, respectively. The first assault spanned May 9th to October, 1972 and this was followed by a shorter, though no less lethal, campaign enacted from December 18th until the 29th of that year.The primary goal of Linebacker I was to slow the progression of war materials from North Vietnam and both sides ultimately claimed the victory: 134 aircraft were lost by the United States to 63 by North Vietnam. Numbers were lower int he follow-up Linebacker campaign, the United States mustering the force of some 2,000 tactical combat aircraft in the process including over 200 B-52 Stratofortress heavy bombers.
