Established as recently as 2006, MARSOC has grown to include 2,700 participants who are used to undertake a variety of special-minded missions.

The terrorist attacks of September 11th - and the subsequent War on Terror - spurred developed of groups like MARSOC. Its establishment has introduced the USMC as part of the SOCOM (Special Operations COMmand) command structure. Force Recon Marines make up most of the players in MARSOC which are further organized into the Marine Raider Regiment, the Marine Raider Support Group and the Marine Special Operations School (the Raider name stems from the amphibious light USMC infantry unit of World War 2 fame). The group is primarily charged with direct-action missions against enemy forces as well as reconnaissance sorties.
