Grup Gerak Khas (GGK) Special Forces Weapons

Special Forces | Arms & Equipment

Formed during the 1960s, Grup Gerak Khas forms the special forces arm of the Malaysian Army service with missions centered around unconventional warfare and the like.

Grup Gerak Khas (GGK) began operations in the early 1960s when first elements (operating under a different title) were formed. This led to an evolution in May of 1965 which produced the Malaysian Special Service Unit (MSSU). In August of 1970, the group was reworked into the 1st Malaysian Special Service Regiment before, in 1981, becoming the Grup Gerak Khas of today. Their primary missions have centered on unconventional and asymmetric warfare, direct-action missions against enemy elements, special reconnaissance and internal defense. The arrangement sees the group at a strength of three regiments and operators wear the iconic green beret. Major commitments involving the GGK have included the Malayan Emergency, the Kosovo War, Operation Restore Hope, and Operation Daulat.
