Making their official large scale debut in World War 1, the modern machine gun had the power to single-handedly change any one engagement in favor of the operator.
The machine gun evolved into a formidable battlefield element by the time of World War 1 - mounted onto aircraft, on naval warships or as stationary ground-based defensive systems. With it would come the very real threat of increased fatalities from a system that could chew through ranks upon ranks of advancing infantry with presses of the trigger. The machine gun would go on to grow into more of portable weapon system by the Second World War characterized by the excellent German MG42. The machine gun remained a highly feared and respected foe and, in the post-war world, would continue to evolve. By the turn of the century, the squad support weapon was in full vogue though systems such as the ubiquitous Browning M2 have continued service in great numbers.
