The Heckler & Koch FABARM FP6 combat shotgun was born from the partnership between German-based Heckler & Koch and Italian-based Fabbrica Bresciana Armi SpA (FABARM) when HK and shotgun-maker Benelli ended their business partnership in 1998. The FP6 was itself designed around the same time and emerged from FABARM facilities while marketing was handled by Heckler & Koch. Production is ongoing as of this writing (2016).

The FP6 shotgun system ended with a weight of 6.6lb and a 41.25 overall length when fitted with a 20-inch-long barrel. It was designed to fire a 12-gauge shell of either 2.75" or 3" length, these fed from a 5+1 or 7+1 (shell dependent) tube magazine and managed through the manually-operated pump-action slide system. The slide was fitted at the tube magazine (under the barrel) in the usual way and loading / reloading was possible through a loading gate located under the forward end of the receiver. Spent shell casings were then jettisoned away from the operator after firing by a large ejection port seen along the right side of the shotgun.

Four versions of the FP6 shotgun have since been released with the group led by the FP6 Standard (HK model 40621HS) which brought with it a 20" long Tribore barrel with perforated heatshield, a synthetic buttstock, and an all-black finish. A small front blade sight aided accuracy some. The FP6 Carbon Fiber (HK model 40621 CF) - as its name suggests - was completed in a carbon finish but lacked the heatshield of the Standard. It introduced a section of Picatinny rail over the receiver for tactical accessories mounting. The third shotgun offered showcased a folding buttstock for compactness and sported a complete standalone pistol grip. It lacked the heatshield of the Standard but retained the Picatinny rail of the Carbon model. A larger, flip-up blade-type sight was also used. The FP Entry became a short-barreled version completed with a 14" long barrel length which reduced the weapon's length considerably. The perforated heatshield over the barrel returned and the model also held a section of Picatinny rail section, featured a large flip-up blade front sight, and was completed with a synthetic shoulder stock. A matte finish rounded out its details.

The FP6 was eventually adopted for service beyond Germany, taken into inventory by various military and police forces of France, Italy, Malaysia, and the United States. The Malaysian special forces group PASKAL selected the FP6 as one of their many weapons.
