Following other world powers, the Chinese military moved ahead with adopting a 40mm automatic grenade-launching system under the LG3 designation. The weapon is produced under the NORINCO brand label which also heads design, development, and manufacture of many war implements including Main Battle Tanks (MBTs), small arms, and ordnance. The LG3 is highly conventional in its design, operation, and appearance, being belt-fed from the left with spend casings ejected from the right. A modification can be made to have the feeding/ejection systems reversed. The operator controls the weapon through spade-type grips at the rear and the muzzle is capped by a slotted brake. The weapon typically sits atop a heavy-duty, adjustable tripod assembly and is operated by at least two personnel.

Like other weapons of this type, the LG3 features a 40x53mm High Velocity (HV) grenade projectile intended for the anti-infantry role. The choice of this caliber allows the weapon to use captured western ammunition stocks if required as it is the primary launching grenade of the U.S. Army and NATO forces. Warhead types are variable allowing for some tactical flexibility such as launching anti-personnel rounds, smoke, and illumination depending on battlefield scenario. A single link belt numbers 30 grenades. The weapon can reach a rate-of-fire of 350 to 400 rounds per minute against target areas up to 2,200 meters (effective range) away. Iron sights are provided while optics are fielded as standard.

The LG3 features a length of 1,030mm with an operating weight nearing 42 kilograms. Its operation is full-automatic-only through a proven blowback/closed-bolt action.
