The Fabrique Nationale (FN Herstal) SLP (Self-Loading Police) is a modern, tactical-level, repeat-fire shotgun aimed at the law enforcement market (as the name would suggest). It was introduced in 2008 and now made available in a Standard form, the SLP Mark I, the SLP Tactical and the SLP Mark 1 Tactical. A conventional shotgun through and through, it features a self-loading mechanism built upon the foundation established by the famous Browning Auto-5 of 1902. The FN SLP is regarded as an excellent shotgun system as has already claimed recognition to support its reliability and quality.

The action of the SLP is of gas-operation with a semi-automatic firing capability while feeding from a multiple-shot magazine tube fitted under the barrel. Sighting is via a tritium ghost ring rear sight (adjustable) coupled to a front sighting device. The grip is incorporated as part of the receiver and stock, ergonomically molded to fit well into the user's primary hand. The stock is of synthetic material and non-adjustable. The trigger is underslung in the traditional way and within each reach of the grip handle. The receiver is left very clean concerning detail with the ejection port and charging handle fitted to the right side. Loading of the weapon is through a port found along the forward-bottom of the receiver. Along the top of the receiver is a short section of Picatinny rail (MIL-STD-1913) for supporting various accessories to suit user requirements. The forend is smooth and long, providing a large landing area for the supporting hand when firing. A perforated recoil pad is set at the shoulder stock to add some comfort when firing. Overall finish is a dark matte.

Differences between the variants are subtle though noteworthy. The SLP Standard weighs approximately 7.5lbs while the Mark I Tactical adds as much as 1lb to the total. Overall length across the series is between 39 and 43 inches and barrels range from 18 to 22 inches. The Standard makes use of up to seven shells (if one chambered) while the Mark I can hold as many as nine (if one chambered).
