Delivered in 1992, the Swiss-German SIG-Sauer SSG 3000 is a modern precision sniping system developed for military and law enforcement use. SIG-Sauer markets the instrument as a "high-performance, long range rifle" designed around the proven elements of a combat rifle offering unparalleled reliability in-the-field as well as the required accuracy at range. The weapon is offered in SSG 3000 18" Patrol and SSG 3000 24" Patrol variants and chambered for the .308 WIN Metric 7.62x51mm NATO cartridge (7.62x51mm NATO).

The SSG 3000 utilizes an industry-standard turn-bolt, manually-actuated design in which the operator manages the bolt handle to eject spent casings and introduce fresh cartridges (from a magazine) into the firing chamber. The handle is offset to the right side of the receiver, primarily favoring right-handed shooters. The bolt, however, makes use of six frontal-locking lugs which interact directly with the barrel, negating any interaction with the receiver proper. The receiver (with Integral Zero MOA M1913 Rail section on newer models) is a single-piece unit incorporating the forend while the included shoulder stock (with ergonomic pistol grip). The shoulder stock is fully-adjustable for height and length as the user sees fit. An adjustable Harris-brand bipod (optional, foldable) is also affixed at the sloped forend. The barrel is of heavy duty quality and hammer-forged for the tolerances involved while being capped by a slotted flash suppressor/muzzle brake (military models featured with sound suppressors). Feeding is by way of a 5-round internal detachable box magazine providing a limited repeat-fire action. As with other precision sniping weapons, the SSG 3000 lacks any iron sights. Instead, the weapon is issued with a standard Hensoldt 1.5-6x42 series telescope though the rail accessories section supports a wider range of scopes from other brands. The trigger is available in a single- and double-stage design and is well-protected along three of its sides - only a short span of ring being used under the trigger itself. Sling loops (Integral Ambi QD Sling Points) at the stock and forend allow use of a shoulder strap for transporting/marching.

Overall length is 46.5 inches with a rifled barrel measuring 23.5 inches long (though this depends on the model in question - the 18" Patrol version is some 5 inches shorter overall than the standard 24" Patrol model). Unloaded weight is 12lbs. Listed muzzle velocity is 2,625 feet-per-second.

To date (January 2014), the SSG 3000 has seen adoption by elements in Brazil (Army), Chile (Army), Colombia (Police and Army), Czech Republic, Egypt (Special Forces), India (Government Security), Norway (Emergency Response), Slovakia (Special Police), South Korea (Marines), Thailand (Army) and Turkey (Special Forces). It is highly-regarded as a superior and well-crafted weapon for its intended role.
