Harris Gunworks has a long-running history with precision rifles bearing its name and this includes the M96 series. The M96 is a military-minded, semi-automatic action rifle developed as an anti-material / anti-personnel solution. It utilizes a gas-operated system allowing for target engagement ranges out to 5,000 feet through use of mounted day/night optics (iron sights are fitted as backup). The weapon is chambered for the large 12.7x99mm NATO cartridge (.50 BMG) and this feeds from a 5-round detachable box magazine. The magazine well sits ahead of the trigger group.

As with most weapons of this class, the M96 is both large and lengthy, weighing a hefty 29lb (with empty magazine in place) and features a length of 1,473mm. The heavy duty barrel measures 736mm (29-inches) long. Construction is of both steel and aluminum (marketed as "aircraft grade") for both robustness in-the-field and as a relative weight-saving measure. To help contend with the massive recoil of firing the 12.7mm cartridge, the rifle is typically fired from the prone position and features a large multi-slotted muzzle brake.

Overall configuration of the weapon is traditional with the action set ahead of the shoulder stock. The pistol grip is underslung in the usual way and the over-receiver scope mounting arm doubles as the carrying handle. The gas cylinder sits over the barrel. The shoulder stock is solid though adjustable, contoured to the lines of the rectangular receiver. The wide and straight box magazine is detachable.

The Harris M96 has seen service with forces of the United States as well as Malaysia. Optional accessories for the product include a laser rangefinder, nigh vision scope, and 4-16x First Plane Mil optics.
