The AK-102 weapon system exists as a carbine form to the full-length AK-101 assault rifle. The AK-101 was developed by famed gunsmith Mikhail Kalashnikov exclusively for export customers keen on the use of the 5.56x45mm NATO standard cartridge but interested in the lasting, rugged legacy of the original AK-47. As such, the modernized AK-101 was born out of forging the tried and true concepts of the original AK-47 series with the composite construction techniques of today (incorporating plastics and polymers), making for a lighter automatic rifle platform. The AK-102 borrows much from the AK-101 and exists in its shortened and slightly lighter form to complement those infantry units needing a bit more in terms of compact firepower and a bit less in terms of operating weight. Production of the AK-102 is handled by the Izhmash facility out of Izhevsk, Russia.

The AK-102 sports an empty weight of 6.6lbs and a general appearance like that of its longer AK-101 cousin, itself a modernized outward copy of the AK-47. Its length is listed at 32.4 inches with the stock fully extended and 23.1 inches with the stock collapsed and locked along the side of the receiver. The stock houses a field cleaning kit. The shorter barrel measures in at 314mm (12.36 inches) in length. The carbine comes complete with adjustable sights though an optical plate can be affixed to the receiver to accept various optical scopes as required.

Like the AK-101 before it, the AK-102's firing action revolves around a gas-actuated, rotating bolt system. Feed is from a 30-round detachable fiberglass box magazine. Rate of fire is listed at 600 rounds per minute with a muzzle velocity of 2,789 feet per second. Maximum range is 500 meters.

The AK-102 is currently in operational service with a few armed forces that have already taken advantage of the base AK-101 series.©MilitaryFactory.com
