The ST Motiv (Daewoo) "K6" Heavy Machine Gun (HMG) is the standard HMG of South Korean fighting forces. It is a locally-produced copy of the storied American M2 Browning Heavy Machine Gun and, therefore, utilizes the same form and function of its widely-used counterpart. The K6 externally mimics its long-running brethren to a high degree, including its spade grips at the rear, slab-sided receiver, and short perforated barrel jacket around the lengthy air-cooled barrel assembly. The K6, like the M2, is used in a variety of ways - mounted on a tripod for sustained firing, mounted on pintles on vehicles for trainable suppression fire - and can be brought to bear against enemy infantry, light-armored vehicles, and low-flying aerial threats. The weapon system is chambered for the 12.7x99mm cartridge and is fed by a belt magazine - the proven cartridge holding inherently strong penetration value at range.
The ROTEM K1 Main Battle Tank (MBT) of the South Korean Army makes use of the K6 as a trainable, roof-mounted Anti-Aircraft (AA) machine gun.
