The Chinese Type 67 is a direct production copy of the Soviet PK series of successful squad automatic weapons developed in the early 1960s. utilizing successful components from other production machine guns such as the British Bren and the Czech ZB26 system, the Type 67 can - like the PK before it - be fielded in a variety of army roles. Those roles can include squad support (to which the carrying handle, bipod and barrel change system come in handy), the sustained fire role when mounted on a heavy duty tripod, vehicle mounts for self-defense or anti-aircraft duties and aircraft mounts for use in helicopter and light strike aircraft.

The weapon was developed in the early 1970's in an effort to supplant the current crop of outdated Soviet equipment in the Chinese inventory and is, by all accounts, as suitable for the many roles afforded to it as the Soviet PK version this system represents.
