The Springfield 1911 DS "Prodigy" 9mm is a modern take on the classic American John Browning Colt M1911 semi-automatic service pistol. The new design from the storied arms-maker adds a double-stacked magazine, high-impact polymer grip, and forged steel slide with optics mount over the frame, an ambidextrous safety mechanism (featuring extended thumb paddles), and Picatinny rail section under the muzzle for tactical accessories mounting. The complete package is something of an ode to the original design of the World War I era, adding modern qualities to a proven century old man-stopper.

The pistol is offered in magazine lengths of 17 and 20 out of the box with an optional 26-round magazine being offered as well. Each spring-loaded magazine features side ports for visual examination of current round count. The trigger is of Single-Action (SA) design and deep serrations are seen along the front and rear of the slides to provide grip areas for charging the firearm / manipulation of the assembly. A beavertail is fitted over the grip for an improved hold and the unique skeletonized hammer protrudes from the rear of the frame to complete the M1911 look. The recoil system involves a 2-piece full-length guide rod.

In lieu of optics, the sidearm also sports iron sights sitting fore and aft along the slide in the usual way, providing a "U-notch" sight picture alignment with green fiber optic front dot. The gun is completed in a black Cerakote finish at all metal parts.

The Prodigy is currently (2024) marketed in two distinct forged stainless-steel barrel assembly lengths - 4.25" or 5" - to suit customer requirements.
