With an eye towards more domestic design, development, and manufacturing of various small arms types, the nation of South Korea quietly modernizes its warfighter under the shadow of threat from the North. Under development is the STC16, a 5.56mm chambered assault rifle solution designed around the rigors and requirements of the modern battlefield, showcasing expected modularity for a gun of this form-and-function.

By and large, the rifle is consistent with AR-15-style assault weapons seen across the Western world.

The STC16 is chambered for the ubiquitous 5.56x45mm NATO standard intermediate rifle cartridge intended for short-to-medium-ranged engagements. Overall weight is 3.0 kilograms and overall length reaches 900mm. Internally, the rifle fires from the proven short-stroke gas-operated piston. Controls are ambidextrous to satisfy both right- and left-handled shooters and this includes the fire selector, magazine catch, and the charging handle. The fire selector switch is within easy reach of the primary hand's thumb. Modularity is offered by way of Picatinny rail sections over the receiver and forend and around the forend at the 3, 9, and 6 o-clock positions. The sections support the mounting of various optics and tactical accessories while optional back-up iron sights are also provided.

The general design of the rifle is conventional: the shoulder / buttstock is skeletal and adjustable. The pistol grip is ergonomically-angled to the rear and the trigger loop is oversized for a gloved hand. The magazine well sits ahead of the trigger ring with the ejection port set over the magazine insertion point. The barrel extends from the forward face of the receiver and is capped by a slotted muzzle brake.
