The Type 97 is a Chinese copy of the proven American-originated Remington Model 870 12-gauge pump-action shotgun (detailed elsewhere on this site) and primarily issued to elements of the People's Liberation Army Ground Force (PLAGF), People's Armed Police (PAP), and Coast Guard units of China. The gun is produced locally by "Hawk Industries" under the overseeing brand label of local defense powerhouse China NORth INDustries COrporation (NORINCO). As with the American M870, the gun is used in both military and civilian circles, supporting lethal, non-lethal (riot control), and sport / game shell types.

The gun is offered in three distinct versions: a military- / law enforcement-grade combat-oriented shotgun, a bullpup-configured form (the action set aft of the pistol grip / trigger unit), and a general, manually-actuated pump-action model. As such, depending on the form in play, the gun can be either of semi-automatic action or user-operated pump-action design when cycling shells into and out of the system. Military models utilize a detachable box magazine in the arrangement while civilian models have the traditional under-barrel tubular magazine to feed from. The gun can hold 5+1 shells when fully loaded (as one shell is chambered) regardless of model variant.

Overall weight of the weapon is 7lb with an overall length of 34.8 inches and a barrel assembly length of 18.5 inches.

Sighting of the gun is had through an adjustable tangent sighting device. Sling loops allow the installation of a shoulder strap for support. The stock is offered in a hinged, fold-over design and the ejection port sits to the right side of the frame.

The initial production model became the "Type 97" and this offering features no shoulder stock for a more tactical appearance and greater portability. Forward support with the offhand is aided by an optional vertical foregrip. Following this is the "Type 97-1" (exported as the "HP9-1" and "Hawk 982") and this model has found its way into the ranks of the PAP for anti-crowd / anti-riot use. The "Type 97-2" has followed more the pattern of the Remington Model 1100 (detailed elsewhere on this site) and offers a folding shoulder stock, adjustable sights, and a semi-automatic action.

The Type 97 MIL/LE model was established for issuance to front-line (including special forces) military and police elements, noted by the use of a detachable box magazine inserted under the receiver as well as broadened support for tactical accessories at the forend assembly (flashlights, laser aimers).

The most drastic change to the design is the "Hawk Bullpup" which reworks the weapon into a handier, more portable solution with a reduced 25" overall length while retaining a full-length barrel assembly. This version also sports an integral carrying handle, is more tactically-minded, and intended for room-to-room clearing actions for police and military units alike.©MilitaryFactory.com
