The Extar "EP9" is from the "Personal Defense Weapon" (PDW) category of firearms - neither true pistol, machine pistol, or submachine gun (and considered a carbine in 9mm form). Such arms benefit from being compact and lightweight making them easier to maneuver in tight confines and transport in general. The series is used by law enforcement, security details, and for personal home defense.

Gunmaker Extar USA is based in Lake Havasu, Arizona. The EP9 was introduced to the market in 2018.

The general arrangement of the EP9 is conventional as firearms go with the underslung pistol grip / trigger unit located under the frame with the magazine well directly ahead. The ramped trigger loop tapers to the rear for a wider trigger finger opening. The shoulder support / brace hardware is extended aft by a tube assembly. The muzzle extends only a short distance ahead of it and can still support a suppressor. Over the receiver, and partially over the forend, a long section of Picatinny rail Is featured for the mounting of optics aids (red dot sights, magnifiers, etc). Additional tactical accessories can be fitted under the forend (such as a foregrip or laser aimer).

The EP9 relies on the proven blowback system of operation for its semi-automatic fire action. Its size and weight make for a stable close-quarters solution chambered for the popular and ubiquitous 9x19mm pistol cartridge used in service, security, and law enforcement handguns around the world. The gun has a "last round bolt hold open" feature, the control lever is set on the left side of the frame, and the charging handle is found on the left side (the extraction port being on the right).

One of the selling points of this PDW is its Glock-type magazine compatibility. The EP9 is fed by a 15- and 17-round Glock-style magazine or an extended, full-length 33-round magazine.

The overall firearm measures 24 inches in length though the barrel assembly is only 6.5 inches long, allowing the gun to keep a small, compact form factor. Complete with its brace installed, it weighs just 4.22lb (4lb otherwise).
