The Anti-Materiel Rifle (AMR) has been of value to infantry-level components in war since the days when lumbering British tanks first approached German positions during the fighting of World War 1 (1914-1918). The response then was the Mauser 1918 T-Gewehr, the world's first such weapon to deal with tanks through a man-portable solution. As the battlefield evolved, so too did anti-tank offerings that have gone on to include land mines and Anti-Tank, Guided Missiles (ATGMs). Despite the dominance of missiles, the Anti-Tank / Anti-Material Rifle has remained on the frontlines, used by snipers to engage enemy personnel, light-armored vehicles, or components of heavier-armored vehicles (sensors, tracks, wheels, etc...) at range.

For the nation of Canada, an indigenous, all-modern AMR is the LRT-3 Sniper Weapon System (SWS) tactical rifle manufactured by PGW Defence.

Comparable in class and performance to the American-made Barrett series of same battlefield role, weapons like the LRT-3 can even the playing field where maximum projectile firepower - with portability - is required. The product, in production since 2005, is chambered to fire the destructive .50 BMG machine gun round out to an effective range of 1,800 meters (equaling just over one mile). The rifle is managed through a manual bolt-action system which sees the handle lever and ejection port seated to the right side of the gun body. Feeding is by way of a five-round straight magazine inserted into the action from underneath and ahead of the pistol grip / trigger unit. The skeletal shoulder stock is fully-adjustable and a folding bipod assembly supports the forward end of the rifle.

The body of the gun features accessory rails over, under, and along the sides for mounting optics, supports, and other tactical items. The 29-inch long barrel assembly is of stainless-steel construction and can accept a suppressor for clandestine ranged work. At the "business end" of the barrel is a multi-baffled brake to help contend with the inherently violent recoil effects of firing such a powerful cartridge. The cartridge is a proven battlefield performer, suitable in neutralizing light-armored vehicles and even infantry (with very lethal results) at range.

At present, the rifle is offered in various finishes including the standard black, cobalt, earth, green, and "sniper gray".

The Canadian LRT-3 series has been adopted by the Ukrainian Ground Forces as its newest sniping solution though a deal worth $770,000 USD.©MilitaryFactory.com
