The QSZ-92 is a relatively new entry into the world market as sidearms go. The system was originally designed out of the "208 Research Institute" by one Liu Ming beginning in 1994. Subsequent trials and formal acceptance into service allowed manufacture to come from the massive NORINCO military establishment which has already produced a myriad of Chinese military equipment including combat tanks, armored vehicles and small arms to date. As of this writing, the QSZ-92 maintains a rather modest global presence within the inventories of a few nations including some civilian sales.

The QSZ-92 is a rather unassuming design, quite conventional in appearance and consistent in layout with Western offerings. The receiver holds the major working internal components as well as a forward rear fixed, 3-dot type sight. The slide fits over the body of the gun and is grooved along the aft sides for handling the slide. The muzzle end of the gun is squared off. The slide covers the barrel which itself measures in at 111mm in length. The gun is 190mm in length and weighs in at 760 grams. The trigger is ergonomically curved and set at amidships in the design, protected by a thin, though integrated oblong trigger ring. The pistol grip is slightly angled to the rear and acts as the magazine well for the detachable box magazine. The magazine is spring-loaded internally to pressure the available cartridges up into the firing chamber. A safety is set the left side of the receiver with the hammer clearly visible at the rear of the design. A Picatinny-type rail system allows the use of accessories.

Operation of the QSZ-92 is based on the recoil produced from a preceding shot. The sidearm further utilizes a locked breech system as well as a rotating barrel locking assembly. The operator need only cock the gun for the first shot, fire the weapon (safety is off) and the subsequent action ejects the spent shell cartridge casing from the chamber and introduces a fresh cartridge from the magazine hold. The slide remains in a rear-set position once the magazine is spent.

The QSZ-92 is said to be chambered for the globally accepted 9x19mm Parabellum cartridge which allows it to be mass marketed to a larger world audience (including civilians). Additionally, NORINCO has put forth a variant that also chambers a more local 5.8x21mm AP (Armor Piercing) cartridge. The two are identified by their appropriate (and respective) "QSZ-92-9" and "QSZ-92-5.8" designations. In the 9mm form, the detachable box magazine (double-stacked cartridges) can house up to 15 rounds while the 5.8mm form carries up to 20 rounds of ammunition.

To date, China remains the primary operator of the QSZ-92 with it being the standard service pistol in issue to the People's Liberation Army. Deliveries began sometime in the latter part of the 1990s. Bangladesh utilizes the QSZ-92-9 9mm Parabellum variant for their military and designates the guns as the "Type 92". Dedicated export variants are the NP-42 and CF-98, the two discernable by their inherent barrel lives - 10,000 rounds for the former and 8,000 rounds for the latter. Additionally, the NP-42 lacks support for a suppressor.
