Submarines Index
Naval Warfare
The submarine remains a highly-feared and respected warmaking platform due to its inherently stealthy nature.
Submarines have been a steady part of an ocean-going force since the turn of the last century. They were first used in useful, and effective, numbers during World War 1 and were evolved by the time of World War 2. German designs helped to move the family tree along and further work produced nuclear-powered types able to circumnavigate the globe without surfacing. Today, the primary threat remains the nuclear-capable, nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine but the diesel-electric type is still in widespread use by powers not willing to invest in nuclear technology due to its inherent dangers and waste.
