USS Freedom (LCS-1) leads the Freedom-class group of 'Littoral Combat Ships' in service with the United States Navy. The class is a wholly modern addition to the service with some thirteen total ships planned for the group. Construction of the ships behan in 2005 at a cost of $362 million per vessel with commissioning ongoing since 2008. The warships are specifically designed with agility and compact footprints in mind all the while carrying an array of weaponry, systems and subsystems for a multi-mission approach.
