Myanmar's geographic positioning requires that it fund a capable, modern navy force. Nearly 20,000 personnel make up its current ranks and warships range from powerful frigates and corvettes to torpedo and coastal craft. One of their more interesting components is the Kyan Sittha-class frigates which are the first vessels in the history of its navy service to incorporate stealth features along its slim and smooth profile. This means fully-enclosed masts, low-profile smoke funnels and as few protrusions about her decks as possible. The class is expected to introduce five total ships when complete with two already having been commissioned for service - UMS Kyan Sittha (F12) and UMS Hsin Byushin (F14).

Kyan Sittha (F12), representing the lead ship of the class, was built by the Myanmar Naval Dockyard and launched on October 22nd, 2012. She was commissioned on March 31st, 2014 and currently maintains an active presence in the Myanmar Navy fleet. She displaces 3,000 tons under standard load and features a length of 348 feet and beam of 44 feet. Her installed power is made up of 4 x SEMT Pielstick 16 PA6 STC diesel units outputting 7,600 horsepower in a COmbined Diesel And Diesel (CODAD) arrangement. Maximum speed is 30 knots in ideal conditions with a range out to 3,800 miles. As a frigate warship, Kyan Sittha exhibits both fleet support and independent operational deep water capabilities to cover a multitude of mission types.

Internally, the warship is made up of systems and sensors originating from China, Russia and India. The BEL RAWL-02 Mk III L-band 2D search radar (India) is fitted as is a Type 362 missile-targeting radar system (China). 2 x Type 47 Fire Control Radars (FCRs) are also installed as is a BEL HMS-X hull-mounted sonar unit (India).

Similarly, her armament suite is largely foreign in origin - led by 1 x 76mm OTO-Melara turreted deck gun (Italy) over the forecastle. She carried 8 x C-802 Anti-Ship Missiles (ASMs) (China) and 6 x Igla Surface-to-Air Missiles (SAMs) (Russia) to counter threats posed by ship-based or aerial enemies. 3 x 30mm NG-18 six-barreled weapons (Russia) serve in the Close-In Weapons System (CIWS) role as a last line of defense. She also carries Anti-Submarine ROCkets (ASROC) and torpedoes for undersea threats.

Over her stern is featured a helipad and full-service hangar facility for the launching and retrieval of a single navy helicopter - typically a Kamov Ka-27 or similar type.
