The Type 096 ballistic missile submarine is being planned for the People's Liberation Army Navy Submarine Force of China. The boat is intended as a delivery vehicle for a mass collection of ballistic missiles over range. It is known to be nuclear-powered, giving it essentially unlimited range, and feature the latest in acoustic dampening techniques to make her silent as well as carry the latest in advanced sensors and processing systems. In addition to its ballistic missile array (numbering some 24 missiles), there should feature standard bow-mounted torpedo tubes to handle homing torpedoes as well as cruise missiles.

Current models indicate a submarine form of conventional design and arrangement. The hull is rounded and smooth with a forward-set sail containing the usual masts and comm equipment. Just aft of the tower is the ballistic missile bay which protrudes from the dorsal spine of the boat from the sail to the just aft of midships. The stern will sport a typical cruciform plane arrangement and feature a single shafted propeller unit.

The Type 096 follows the in-service Type 094 boats of the modern Chinese Navy. The class is also known as the Tang-class by NATO and carries the Chinese designation of 09-VI in some sources.

Due to the newness of this submarine, this article will be updated as information permits.©MilitaryFactory.com
